Isogloss map for final -z elision, in Iberian Peninsula Spanish, according to ALPI .
The tendency to elide the postvowel z's is related to the s's aspiration. We can see that in some areas (zone D) where /s/ and /z/ are distinguished before vowel, final -z is pronounced [s]. However, the limits for this map are somewhat different from the s's aspiration map. It remains to be checked how the -z- is pronounced when it is postvowel but not final.
The words registered in the ALPI surveys that have been used in this map are :
Zone A : Points where final -z is not elided.
Zone B : Points where final -z is elided in 1 of all 3 words.
Zone C : Points where final -z is elided in 2 or 3 of all 3 words.
Zone D : Points where final -z is pronounced as [s].
Zone E : Other languages. Zones where historically Spanish is not the local language.
